Overview
Each year Boreal Waters distributes more than $800,000 in scholarships to students throughout northeast Minnesota and northwest Wisconsin. Funded by the generosity of individuals, families, and local organizations, these awards help learners of all ages pursue education, expand opportunities, and contribute back to their communities.

Most awards are considered through our universal application, which will be available in December 2025 and will close on February 24, 2026.
Who can apply
Open to learners of all ages and backgrounds.
You may qualify if you:
- Live in northeast Minnesota or northwest Wisconsin
- Plan to enroll in a college, university, community or technical college, or trade school
- Meet specific preferences tied to academic focus, school affiliation, or community involvement

Hubert A. Nelson Scholarship Fund
Background: Hubert A. Nelson was born in Duluth in 1913. A University of Minnesota alumnus, he served with the FBI and later became treasurer of the W. S. Moore Mining Co. in Duluth. He also worked with the Duluth Development Co., playing a key role in much of the downtown Duluth renovation.
Eligibility for this fund
Applicants must:
- Be graduates of one of the following schools: Duluth Denfeld, Duluth East, Harbor City International, Marshall School, Superior Senior High School, Lakeview Christian Academy, Stella Maris Academy, or Maranatha Academy
- Be enrolled at either the University of Minnesota Duluth or the University of Wisconsin–Superior
- Demonstrate financial need
- Have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher
- Be pursuing a course of study in Business or Accounting
Award amount
$2,000 per year, renewable for up to four years (maximum total award $8,000).

This scholarship is awarded through the Universal Application. The universal application opens December 2025 and closes February 24, 2026.
