Anna Louise Hoffman served as National Secretary of Iota Sigma Pi for two consecutive terms (1948–1954), belonged to the Radium Chapter, and acted as ΙΣΠ Regional Director for Region V (Eastern) for many years until her death in 1974. In 1977 the National Council established the Anna Louise Hoffman Award for Outstanding Achievement in Graduate Research in her honor.
Eligibility and Purpose
The award recognizes exceptional chemical research conducted by a woman graduate student. At the time of nomination the nominee must be a full-time (as defined by her institution) woman graduate student who is pursuing a graduate degree at an accredited institution. The research submitted must be original and fall within a primary chemical discipline (examples include analytical, biochemical, inorganic, organic, physical, or related/ancillary areas). Membership in Iota Sigma Pi is not required but is permitted.
Nomination Rules
- Nominations must be submitted by faculty members from the nominee’s current institution.
- A single academic department may submit only one nomination each year.
Required Submission (Dossier)
The nominator must compile the complete nomination into one electronic file (PDF recommended) and send it to the Director of Student Awards at ispncstudentawards@gmail.com. The dossier must include:
1. A completed cover sheet that lists the candidate’s permanent (home) address and school address.
2. An academic history that includes transcripts from all colleges and universities the candidate has attended. Official transcripts from the registrar are preferred; unofficial transcripts sent by a faculty member are acceptable.

The candidate should arrange for confidential letters of recommendation. The nominator is responsible for collecting and submitting these letters electronically by the application deadline. Two letters are required:
- One from someone who can attest to the candidate’s research (for example, the research adviser).
- One from another individual who is familiar with the candidate’s research abilities.
Transcripts
Official transcripts should be mailed or emailed directly to ispncstudentawards@gmail.com, separate from the nomination dossier, and must be received no later than February 15. If necessary, unofficial transcripts may be provided by a faculty member from the institution.
