Available scholarships and eligibility
The DAR Scholarship and American Indians Committees offer multiple scholarship opportunities, each with its own eligibility standards and document requirements. Fields covered include nursing, medicine, occupational or physical therapy, law, business administration, English, math, chemistry, music (voice or piano only), American history, history, government, American Studies, historic preservation, horticulture, and elementary and secondary education. Two awards are reserved specifically for Native American students (proof of membership in a federally or state-recognized tribe is required). More than twenty of the scholarships are intended for graduating high school seniors, undergraduate students, or graduate students. Two scholarships are restricted to DAR members or descendants/dependents of DAR members — applicants for those awards must supply the DAR member’s name, national membership number, and their relationship to that member.

Before you begin — documents and information to have ready
Prepare electronic versions of all items you will enter or upload. All information submitted should be typed or computer-generated. If you accidentally upload a wrong file, consult “Tips for Removing a Document” in the FAQ (top right of the application) for instructions.

Required items include:
- A personal statement (career objectives) of no more than 1,000 words.
- Recent transcripts as applicable: high school and/or college/graduate transcripts. Unofficial copies are acceptable for the application, but official transcripts will be required (mailed or emailed to DAR) if you are selected for a scholarship. Home-schooled applicants must include transcripts from grade nine through your final year. Applicants with a GED should submit their GED transcript. Note: DAR no longer requires SAT or ACT scores, class size, or class rank for graduating high school applicants.
- Any scholarship-specific documentation (for example: statements of financial need, letters of acceptance into a special program or transcripts showing enrollment in programs such as nursing or medicine, proof of tribal membership for Native American-specific awards, or graduate test scores such as MCAT or LSAT when required).
- Proof of U.S. citizenship — a photocopy of a birth certificate, naturalization papers, or the information page of a U.S. passport. Cover all photographs and blackout any Social Security numbers before uploading.
- A one-page (one side of an 8.5" x 11") summary listing extracurricular activities, honors, and scholastic achievements. This page must include your name.

Letters of recommendation
You must request between two and four letters of recommendation. Relatives may not write recommendations.

Guidelines for recommenders and letters:
- Acceptable recommenders include teachers, counselors, instructors, professors, coaches, mentors, spiritual leaders, administrators, co-workers, or supervisors.
- Letters should describe your abilities, work habits, integrity, character, potential, and volunteer activities. Each recommendation must have been written within the past year and include the date, the recommender’s name, title, signature, and contact information.
- Beginning in the 2024–2025 cycle, applicants are responsible for uploading recommendation letters themselves into the online application; recommenders will no longer need to create a Blackbaud ID to submit recommendations.
- DAR cannot accept letters sent via email or postal mail on your behalf, nor from third-party platforms. All recommendation letters must be uploaded by you directly into your application.

If you have questions about any specific scholarship’s requirements, review that award’s criteria carefully before submitting materials.
